The Vampire Diaries – 3:21: Before Sunset

Evil Alaric gives us a taste of how bad-ass he can be this week!

Super vampire, Alaric sits in his classroom and considers things while Caroline and Rebekah clean-up the decorations. The two have a moment and both apologize for misfortunes they have endured. When Rebekah heads to another area, she runs into undead Alaric and he tries to take her out. Caroline interferes, they both stake him with the white oak and make a run for it. Caroline temporarily forgets she is a vampire with super speed and runs to her car instead of all the way home. While she fumbles with her keys, Alaric catches her, breaks her neck and drags her back into the school – at the same time, getting a severe sunburn.

Rebekah witnesses the entire exchange and runs home to tell Klaus what happened. He is in the midst of packing and having Tyler move his boxes out. He says he doesn’t really care and is only interested in making more hybrids to protect himself as well as making tracks out of Mystic Falls. Rebekah is upset and storms out.

Under the assumption that Alaric is dead instead of undead, Elena and Jeremy busy themselves with re-painting his room. Stefan stops by to check up on them and make sure everything is okay. Jeremy tells him not to let the door hit his butt on the way out, because he wants a vampire-free day. Ha! Little does he know.

As Stefan goes to leave, Damon arrives with Bonnie in tow. Damon gives Stefan the lowdown on what happened with Bonnie and Alaric. He barely finishes his update when Klaus shows up to collect his bloodbank aka Elena. Jeremy answers the door, they slam it in his face, so he starts breaking windows. Then he huffs, puffs and blows the door open. What not exactly, but sort of.

Thinking its a practical joke when she sees Alaric’s name on her call display, Elena answers her phone and tells the caller it isn’t very funny. Of course it’s actually Alaric calling to let her know that he has Caroline and he will kill her unless Elena gets to the school pronto! Stefan rushes upstairs to check on Elena, but she is already gone.

Showing that he has a flair for the dramatics, Klaus returns with a BBQ gas cylinder in one hand and a burning newspaper in the other. He’s prepared to burn the house down to get Elena outside. Stefan heads him off before he can do any more property damage with news that she is gone. They brainstorm ways to take out Alaric.

Bonnie joins them outside with an idea – that she can try the same bonding spell Abby used on Mikael. They are all in agreement. She’ll just need Abby to tell her how the spell works.

At the school, Elena shows up and Alaric tells her she can free Caroline. When she goes near her, he stops her and continues his torture. She pulls the whole, “you promised to let her go”. And he retorts with a beautiful, “How many times do I have to tell you? Stop trusting vampires”! Point, Alaric!

Abby shows up at the Salvatore mansion and tells Bonnie that dark magic is required to make the spell work. Also, that she will require a trade. A living heart for a dead one. Bonnie puts her in her place and sends her on her way.

Everyone shows up at the school with a plan of action. The Salvatore brothers are supposed to distract Alaric, while Klaus grabs his heart and stops it. They all do a shooter of Bonnie’s blood so she is connected to them and knows when the connection has been made. It is to be Jeremy’s living heart that will be sacrificed.

Meanwhile, Alaric taunts, pokes and prods Elena into killing Caroline. After all, she did ask him how to defend herself against vamps. She has yet to kill one though. He happens to think she could make a good hunter. Finally, when he puts the stake in her hand and tries to force her to use it on Caroline, she takes a swing and a miss at him and counters with the same jar of Vervain he has been using to torture Caroline with. While he attempts to get his face to stop burning, she removes the restraints from Caroline and they make a run for it. Caroline gets out and Alaric catches Elena. She presses him to find out why he won’t just kill her, since he clearly doesn’t have any humanity left. While he considers it the Salvatore brothers jump him. He takes both down and faces Klaus. Klaus gets his hand on his heart. As soon as the connection is made, Bonnie starts chanting. The connection is severed before the spell can take effect, when Alaric breaks Klaus’s wrist. Alaric has Klaus on the ground, stake in hand when Elena shows up with a sharp object at her neck. She threatens to kill herself, having realized that Alaric’s life is tied to hers. So if she dies, so does he. She starts to cut her neck and this is enough of a distration for Klaus to get the upper hand. He grabs Elena and takes off.

As Tyler is still moving boxes, he sees Elena tied to the chair and being bled by Klaus. He goes to help her and Klaus stops him. Tyler looks like he is resisting his sire bond, when Klaus screams in his face and tells him to get more blood bags. Elena asks Tyler to get Damon and Stefan. He takes off.

Back at the school, Damon and Stefan regain consciousness and Damon wonders why he is still alive. In a manner of speaking. Alaric shouts at them and tells them to go do what they are best at – saving Elena. He explains about their lives being tied to each other and now that Klaus knows the loophole, he will bleed her and kill her. Plus he is stuck in the school until sunset, so it’s on them.

When Tyler returns to untie Elena, Klaus tells him to back away from her. He finally reveals he is no longer Klaus’s bitch and goes to grab Elena. Klaus tosses Elena and the two scuffle. That’s when Damon and Stefan show up and get in on the action. While Damon and Tyler hold Klaus down, Stefan does the heart thing. Bonnie is waiting in the woods with Jeremy. In what seems like forever, Klaus’s heart slows down and finally stops. The darkness starts to envelop Bonnie while she casts her spell. When Klaus drops to the ground, she pounds on Jeremy’s chest to revive him.

Damon and Stefan escort Elena home. She promises she is okay, even though she lost a LOT of blood. Once on the doorstep she apologizes to both of them for not being able to make a decision between them. The idea of losing one or the other terrifies her. They take off, with Klaus’s coffin and a plan to dump it at the bottom of the ocean. She goes inside to find Bonnie, Caroline, Jeremy, Matt, and Tyler waiting to celebrate their first Klaus-free moments in a long time. When everybody leaves, she tells Jeremy that it is impossible for her to kill any of the vampires she knows – they are all her family. He leaves her alone and she collapses, nose bleeding.

Alaric calls a council meeting to address the supernatural problem in Mystic Falls without revealing he is now one as well. He tells the council they have been failed by the Sheriff, who has a vampire daughter and the Mayor with her vampire/werewolf son.
