Fantasy Flight Games has announced an open beta for the first of three new Star Wars RPGs. The first game, Edge of the Empire, will focus on scounrels and bounty hunters who live at the fringe of society. It will include rules for using the Force but not Jedi per se. (Think “A New Hope“.) The other two announce games will focus on large battles including capital ship and Jedi and other Force traditions respectively.
To get into the beta for Edge of the Empire you must purchase a 224 page printed book from FFG or a local retailer who takes part in the playtest. Edge of the Empire uses custom dice that sound remarkably like the ones use in FFG’s 3rd edition Warhammer Fantasy Roleplaying Game and look like the dice used in their X-Wing miniatures game. Edge of the Empire basically looks to use a less fidley version of WFRP 3e.
Like WFRP 3e players roll a pool of dice based on skill and modifiers, which have special symbols on them. The task isn’t just resolved by the roll, but the roll itself explains why you were successful or failed adding it little details to your adventure.
Edge of the Empire has six attributes: Agility, Brawn, Cunning, Intellect, Presence, and Willpower. They range from 1 to 6. Attributes and skills contribute different dice to your pool as well as modifiers adding different dice.
There are eight races in the game: Bothans, Droids (Class Four), Gands, Humans, Rodians, Trandoshans, Twi’leks, and Wookiees. There are loose classes that determine your skills and talents. The six carreers are: Bounty Hunter, Colonist, Explorer, Hired Gun,Smuggler, and Technician. Each career gets eight career skills and a character starts with a single rank in four and each career breaks down into three specializations. Each specialization has around twenty talents.
There are starship combat rules and basic Force abilities and powers in the game. Don’t expect Clone Wars type Jedi action though, that’s for the third book.
The beta of Edge of the Empire is limited to 5000 copies and is available now from FFG’s web store.
