Movie Releases for November 9th, 2012
New in theaters this week: Skyfall, Lincoln, A Royal Affair and Starlet.
Run time: 143 min
Genre(s): Action, Adventure, Crime, Thriller
Director: Sam Mendes
Stars: Daniel Craig, Javier Bardem, Naomie Harris, Judi Dench
Synopsis: Bond’s loyalty to M is tested as her past comes back to haunt her. As MI6 comes under attack, 007 must track down and destroy the threat, no matter how personal the cost.
Casino Royale was so good and Quantum of Solace was so disappointing. Skyfall though has done over $290M in overseas box office and smashed British records. Looks like our hopes have been answered and our fears banished.
Genre(s): Biography, Drama, History, War
Director: Steven Spielberg
Stars: Daniel Day-Lewis, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Tommy Lee Jones, John Hawkes
Synopsis: As the Civil War continues to rage, America’s president struggles with continuing carnage on the battlefield and as he fights with many inside his own cabinet on the decision to emancipate the slaves.
This would be the other Lincoln movie, the one with Steven Spielberg and without vampires. The cast is awesome and Day-Lewis looks scarily like Abe. Spielberg can make history entertaining and poignant. Even if it’s a bad movie for Spielberg it’s probably going to be better than most.
A Royal Affair
Run time: 137 min
Genre(s): Drama, History, Romance
Director: Nikolaj Arcel
Stars: Alicia Vikander, Mads Mikkelsen, Mikkel Boe Følsgaard, Trine Dyrholm
Synopsis: A young queen, who is married to an insane king, falls secretly in love with her physician – and together they start a revolution that changes a nation forever.
Arcel has a few connections to the Millennium (AKA The Girl…) movies. Here we move into The Tudors or Game of Thrones territory. Was well received on the European festival circuit.
Run time: 103 min
Director: Sean Baker
Stars: Dree Hemingway, Besedka Johnson, James Ransone, Asa Akira
Synopsis: An unlikely friendship forms between 21 year-old Jane and the elderly Sadie after Jane discovers a hidden stash of money inside an object at Sadie’s yard sale.
Baker takes his experiences of hanging around porn stars and creates an offbeat story about a lost girl who fixates on an elderly woman after buying something from her yard sale.
