Opening this week in theaters: Cloud Atlas, Chasing Mavericks, Silent Hill: Revelation 3D and Fun Size.

Cloud Atlas
Rating: R
Run time: 172 min
Genre(s): Drama, Mystery, Sci-Fi
Directors: Tom Tykwer, Andy Wachowski, Lana Wachowski
Stars: Tom Hanks, Halle Berry, Hugh Grant, Hugo Weaving
Synopsis: An exploration of how the actions of individual lives impact one another in the past, present and future, as one soul is shaped from a killer into a hero, and an act of kindness ripples across centuries to inspire a revolution.

The Buzz
If you’ve seen the trailers and are a bit confused then don’t worry. I have faith the Wachowskis can make sense of David Mitchell’s serial narrative. What I’m not so sure of is whether we are getting The Matrix and Bound or The Matrix Reloaded and Speed Racer. Either way with the cast and crew associated with this ambitious spectacle even if it is a disaster it should be a beautiful one. But it won’t be a disaster.

Chasing Mavericks
Rating: PG
Genre(s): Drama, Sport
Directors: Michael Apted, Curtis Hanson
Stars: Jonny Weston, Gerard Butler, Elisabeth Shue, Abigail Spencer
Synopsis: When young Jay Moriarty discovers that the mythic Mavericks surf break, one of the biggest waves on Earth, exists just miles from his Santa Cruz home, he enlists the help of local legend Frosty Hesson to train him to survive it.

The Buzz
A surfing movie based on a true story who the subject is tragically already dead. The surf and Butler should be spectacular, but quickly, name a great movie based on surfing.

Silent Hill: Revelation 3D
Rating: R
Run time: 94 min
Genre(s): Horror, Mystery, Thriller
Director: Michael J. Bassett
Stars: Sean Bean, Radha Mitchell, Carrie-Anne Moss, Adelaide Clemens
Synopsis: When her father disappears, Heather Mason is drawn into a strange and terrifying alternate reality that holds answers to the horrific nightmares that have plagued her since childhood.

The Buzz
Sean Bean playing two characters… that’s like twice the chance to die in another movie. OK seriously, Silent Hill was a great video game, but the things that make for good games don’t always make for great movies, Resident Evil, I’m looking at you. A new company doing their take on a video game that many people don’t even know started as a video game. You’re an adult, you can live with your own choices.

Fun Size
Genre(s): Comedy
Director: Josh Schwartz
Stars: Victoria Justice, Johnny Knoxville, Chelsea Handler, Ana Gasteyer
Synopsis: Wren’s Halloween plans go awry when she’s made to babysit her brother, who disappears into a sea of trick-or-treaters. With her best friend and two nerds at her side, she needs to find her brother before her mom finds out he’s missing.

The Buzz
From the minds of Gossip Girl and The Colbert Report comes… say what?!? Honestly a supernatural comedy written by Max Werner and put together with the polish of Gossip Girl isn’t that bad an idea. If done properly it could be both funny and scary, but not in a Scream way… more funny less scary. Then again it could all go horribly wrong, but you weren’t going to see this straight anyway were you.
