Time travel should be messy. Time travel should also not make a whole lot of sense. Looper is a rare gem of cinema that is gritty, interesting, action packed and could very well be a close depiction of our own future.

Looper stars the dynamo that is Bruce Willis and his younger self, portrayed by Joseph Gordon-Levitt. The premise is simple. Loopers are employed by future criminal syndicates to dispose of bodies, as it has become impossible to do so in the future. Well, the future of the future. The film takes place roughly 30 years in the future, and the bodies are being sent back from 30 years from that future. Alright, maybe it isn’t all that simple, but it sure as hell is an intriguing premise.

One of the factors that makes this movie so great is its believability. The technology (other than the time travel) isn’t a far leap from what we have now and all of the characters act as though you would expect them to given their individual situations. In addition, the acting is strong and consistent throughout.

Looper makes you think, hooks your interest and continues to be intriguing long after the film has ended. It is also fast paced, full of action and both futuristic while containing a western flair. If you find the idea of time travel the least bit interesting, Looper is certainly for you.
