Opening this week in theatres: Dredd, End of Watch, House at the End of the Street and Trouble with the Curve.

Dredd
Rating: R
Run time: 95 min
Genre(s): Action, Sci-Fi
Director: Pete Travis
Stars: Karl Urban, Olivia Thirlby, Lena Headey, Rachel Wood
Synopsis: In a violent, futuristic city where the police have the authority to act as judge, jury and executioner, a cop teams with a trainee to take down a gang that deals the reality-altering drug, SLO-MO.

The Buzz
Forget that Stallone pile of steaming… Karl Urban has assured us that his helmet never comes off his head, just like in the comics. Seems like it was going to be a more faithful adaptation, but what are we to expect when the director was removed from editing the movie and the writer is putting the film together. Let’s hope all the interesting action isn’t happening in the board room.

End of Watch
Rating: R
Run time: 109 min
Genre(s): Crime, Drama, Mystery, Thriller
Director: David Ayer
Stars: Jake Gyllenhaal, Michael Peña, Anna Kendrick, America Ferrera
Synopsis: Two young officers are marked for death after confiscating a small cache of money and firearms from the members of a notorious cartel, during a routine traffic stop.

The Buzz
Is Ayer remaking his own movies or trying to perfect one idea before moving onto another one? You should have a pretty good idea of what you are going to see by now.

House at the End of the Street
Rating: PG-13
Run time: 101 min
Genre(s): Horror, Thriller
Director: Mark Tonderai
Stars: Jennifer Lawrence, Elisabeth Shue, Max Thieriot, Gil Bellows
Synopsis: A mother and daughter move to a new town and find themselves living next door to a house where a young girl murdered her parents. When the daughter befriends the surviving son, she learns the story is far from over.

The Buzz
Jennifer Lawrence gets a chance to show some great acting chops away from a scary teen focussed movie. Oh, wait… I guess with over a third of US houses having no one living in them, there is an abundance of scary house stories that Hollywood is all over.

Trouble with the Curve
Rating: PG-13
Run time: 111 min
Genre(s): Drama
Director: Robert Lorenz
Stars: Clint Eastwood, Amy Adams, John Goodman, Justin Timberlake
Synopsis: An ailing baseball scout in his twilight years takes his daughter along for one last recruiting trip.

The Buzz
It’s the non-Eastwood Eastwood movie. It looks and feels like something Clint would direct, but he didn’t. Lorenz is a longtime associate of Eastwood’s and it should be interesting to see him focus on just one job on the big screen.
