Studio Ghibli’s From Up on Poppy Hill will be released in North America next March by GKIDS. Directed by Goro Miyazaki from a screenplay by Hayao Miyazaki and based on the serial comic of the same name From Up on Poppy Hill is a period film set in 1963 in Yokohama. It  was the top-grossing Japanese film of 2011, earning over $56 million at the Japanese box office and winning the Japan Academy Prize for Animation in 2012.

The film centers on a high school couple’s innocent love and the secrets surrounding their births. Japan is preparing to host the 1964 Olympics and a post war Japan struggles to embrace modernity and to forget its troubled past. The color palette and ’60s pop soundtrack helps to evoke the era of hope and innocence.

While the English language dub will be produced by long time Miyazaki collaborators Kathleen Kennedy and Frank Marshall, it marks the first time a Studio Ghibli film will not be released by Disney.
