New in theaters this week: The Bourne Legacy, The Campaign and Hope Springs.

The Bourne Legacy
Rating: PG-13
Run time: 135 min
Genre(s): Action, Adventure, Thriller
Director: Tony Gilroy
Stars: Jeremy Renner, Rachel Weisz, Edward Norton, Scott Glenn
Synopsis: An expansion of the universe from Robert Ludlum’s novels, centered on a new hero whose stakes have been triggered by the events of the previous three films.

The Buzz
Have you seen the trailer for this movie? Makes Casino Royale look like the original Bourne films. Isn’t the appeal of the Bourne franchise a gritty and somewhat plausible spy story. Yet here we have a guy half way to Steve Rogers. I hope Jeremy Renner has better luck with the Mission Impossible franchise where over the top action is expected.

The Campaign
Rating: R
Genre(s): Comedy
Director: Jay Roach
Stars: Will Ferrell, Zach Galifianakis, Jason Sudeikis, Dylan McDermott
Synopsis: In order to gain influence over their North Carolina district, two CEOs seize an opportunity to oust long-term congressman Cam Brady by putting up a rival candidate. Their man: naïve Marty Huggins, director of the local Tourism Center.

The Buzz
Jay Roach, Will Ferrell, Zach Galifianakis, comedy paint by numbers. Sure each of them have done original and very great stuff, but most of it is very pedestrian lowest common denominator humor. Hope for the best, prepare for the worst.

Hope Springs
Rating: PG-13
Run time: 100 min
Genre(s): Comedy, Drama
Director: David Frankel
Stars: Meryl Streep, Tommy Lee Jones, Steve Carell, Jean Smart
Synopsis: After thirty years of marriage, a middle-aged couple attends an intense, week-long counselling session to work on their relationship.

The Buzz
Meryl Streep in a dramedy of a middle-aged couple going through counselling. Seems the infallible Ms. Streep is back in It’s Complicated territory. Steve Carell as a therapist, yikes! Meryl Streep and Tommy Lee Jones doing couples therapy would be an awesome and intense drama. This seems more a wasted opportunity. Unless the comedy is like Frankel’s Devil Wears Prada in which case, Steve Carell as a therapist?
