Based on the popular video game series by EA, the Need for Speed movie is on the fast-track at DreamWorks studios with production starting in early 2013. Disney probably hoping to capture some Fast and the Furious mojo will distribute the currently untitled film worldwide release on February 7, 2014.

Developed by George and John Gatis the movie will not be based on any single game in the lengthy franchise, but will be a fast-paced and high-octane homage to the great car culture films of the ’70s. George Gatis’ screenplay is said to be extremely faithful to the spirit of the Need For Speed series. Scott Waugh (Act of Valor) who has helped create Torque, The Italian Job and Biker Boys has been tapped to direct the film.

The movie will follow a reboot of Need for Speed: Most Wanted by Criterion Games which is set for release on October 30, 2012.
