New Movies for May 18th, 2012
New in theaters this week is Battleship, What to Expect When You’re Expecting, The Dictator and Hysteria.
Run time: 131 min
Genre(s): Action, Sci-Fi, Thriller
Director: Peter Berg
Stars: Alexander Skarsgård, Brooklyn Decker, Liam Neeson, Rihanna
Synopsis: A fleet of ships is forced to do battle with an armada of unknown origins in order to discover and thwart their destructive goals.
Oh my! The idea of a movie based on a board game seems silly outside of Clue. The idea of a movie paying lip service to a board game staring Liam Neeson as a US Navy Captain or Rihanna pretending to be a modern day Uhura… oh my. But this exercise in abject insanity has already hauled in over a $170 million in the rest of the world. And they say Americans have no taste?
What to Expect When You’re Expecting
Run time: 110 min
Genre(s): Comedy, Drama, Romance
Director: Kirk Jones
Stars: Cameron Diaz, Matthew Morrison, J. Todd Smith, Dennis Quaid
Synopsis: A look at love through the eyes of five interconnected couples experiencing the thrills and surprises of having a baby, and ultimately coming to understand the universal truth that no matter what you plan for, life doesn’t always deliver what’s expected.
OK, so the trailer looks a bit funny in the somewhat dated notion that all guys don’t want to be dads. Some of the one-liners are pretty spot on commentaries of parenthood. But I’m not sure why someone would think that a line of parenting self-help books would make a great basis for a Rom-Com. Maybe is was the other half of the couple that thought a board game was the great basis of a movie.
Run time: 83 min
Director: Larry Charles
Stars: Sacha Baron Cohen, Anna Faris, John C. Reilly, Ben Kingsley
Synopsis: The heroic story of a dictator who risks his life to ensure that democracy would never come to the country he so lovingly oppressed.
Cohen’s first foray into a non-Ali G. Show character. And sure it looks kinda fun, but it seems to follow the same pattern of his other two movies of follow Cohen in character and film the wake left behind. I want Cohen to be funny and make a great movie, but maybe it’s time to find a new recipe.
Run time: 100 min
Genre(s): Comedy, Romance
Director: Tanya Wexler
Stars: Maggie Gyllenhaal, Hugh Dancy, Jonathan Pryce, Felicity Jones
Synopsis: The truth of how Mortimer Granville devised the invention of the first vibrator in the name of medical science.
Gyllenhaal is back in a sex comedy after making her big splash a decade ago in Secretary. Where has the time gone. Produced more like a play and pitched at an older audience, does anyone think the 40+ crowd is gonna rush out to see the invention of a sex toy? I think they get it in a plain brown bag when it coms out on home video.
