May Day! May Day! – Part One
Hello. My name id Field, Lyle Field.
The month of May. It is the time of year where the days are brighter and brighter, warmer and warmer, greener and greener. It is also the time of year where my comic book budget goes to hell!
For the next four weeks, the stuff that I order through Dave’s Pop Culture a few months ago are all coming at once.
Week 1 is the calm before the storm.
Let’s start with my regular monthly titles that I pick up.
Earth 2 #1, this is the best debut issue ever since the New DC 52 started last September. James Robinson has finally found his groove again just by the first issue of Earth 2 alone. The man who wrote the Golden Age, Starman and helped bring about the return of the Justice Society in 1999 has had some writing pains especially his last few DC ventures, specifically the how he inherited the New Krypton Saga from Geoff Johns in 2009 and his lukewarm run in the Justice League of America. He’s more than made up for lost time just by the first issue of Earth 2 alone. Can he keep it up… can’t wait to watch him. Man, killing the Trinity in the first issue is a stroke of genius! He really surprised me. Nicola Scott has finally found a top-tier title after languishing in low-end selling titles such as the Teen Titans and the Secret Six. Looking forward to do a proper review in about six months time.
World’s Finest #1 and Smallville Season 11 #1 has also had very strong debuts. The dream team of Levitz, Perez and Maguire is awesome in an old school sort of way and the continuation of the Smallville series ala comic book/digital comics format with former Smallville TV writer Bryan Miller is pretty cool. Dial H #1, not my type of title. Don’t think I’ll get the second issue. Action Comics #9 was a nice diversion by Morrison and Ha while Detective Comics #9 was a Nite of the Owls tie-in that proved more disappointing than I thought. Probably Daniels’ worse single issue since the New DC 52 started.
Nope, didn’t purchase any Marvel titles again. Why? That’s a story for another review.
I purchased Justice League Volume 1: The Origin HC and I was definitely right… Johns/Lee/Williams’ first story arc is a better read in this format than as a monthly title.
The only other item I ordered and purchased is the Batman Beyond hoodie.
What did it cost me… Ching! Ching! $70.
Like I said, Week 1 is the calm of the storm.
Week 2: 4 freakin’ hardcovers plus monthlies… looking at $200 at least.
There goes my booze money for the week, but I’m happy!
