The Avengers 2nd Highest Single Day Opening
Joss Whedon’s superhero mash-up has marked its way to the second highest single day gross in movie history. With $80.5 million domestically, that number places it behind only Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 which earned $91 million, according to Box Office Mojo.
Anyone worried that Marvel couldn’t live up to its own hype with The Avengers need only look at the reviews to see that Earth’s Mightiest Heroes have indeed performed to the best of their ability. The Avengers is the first Marvel movie marketed by Disney collected $18.7 million from the midnight showings alone, the highest midnight open for a superhero genre. Not only is The Avengers an international box-office success having raked in $300 million and soon-to-be domestic hit, the film is well received by critics, geeks and moviegoers of all other assorted shapes and sizes.
Claudia Puig of USA Today says it’s essentially six movies in one, which is why it’s two and a half hours long. (Whedon cut 30 minutes what will find its way back onto the home video release.) Joss Whedon tips his hat to fanboys without alienating regular popcorn munchers. Matt Patches of Hollywood.com says that the ensemble cast means that you get the right amount of Downey delivered one-liners at the right time rather than the mess of Iron Man 2. And that is the one thing Whedon really gets is timing, which is so important for irony or sarcasm. Joss may have even solved the Hulk, who’s two other films fell flat. Rather than Shakespeare him up, just use him to do what he does best… smash!!! Hulk becomes the exclamation point on much of the physical comedy.
The Avengers probably made more money in its opening day than the last movie Whedon directed (Serenity) in all mediums. The Avengers was made with the same love that crafted his previous work, but now shows that Whedon IS the real deal. The only question to ask now is what movie he’ll do before Avengers 2.http://pokupo.com/2012/05/05/the-avengers-2nd-highest-single-day-opening/MoviesDisney,Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2,Iron Man 2,Joss Whedon,Marvel,Robert Downey Jr.,Serenity,The Avengers
