The Metallica Video Game That Never Was
You no doubt know about the Guitar Hero derived Metallica video game, but did you know that around the time the band was making “St. Anger”, Black Label Games was working on a post apocalyptic driving game centred around the Bay-area band. Looking at the art and video that has leaked out about the aborted game you get a Brutal Legend vibe with a bit more Mad Max and less Lord of the Rings.
The video could best be summarized as missiles, monster trucks and Metallica. The art of the band members looks like stuff you’d find in a tabletop RPG book, but not all together odd for where the band was in the ‘aughts. According to the trailer the game was to be released in 2005 for consoles. Obviously that never happened, but the game seems to have been far enough along to have in-game renders, a trailer, a publisher (Vivendi) and an expected release date.
The game probably died with the publisher’s troubles, but maybe someone came to their senses and realized that Motorstorm with guns had nothing to do with a Rock n Roll Hall of Fame band. Still, if you’re a fan of the band and racing games (or train wrecks), it would have been cool to see what this game might have been like.
