New movies this week are The Grey, One For The Money, Man on a Ledge, Albert Nobbs and In Darkness. We Need to Talk About Kevin goes wider.

The Grey
Rated: R
Runtime: 117 min
Genre(s): Action, Drama, Thriller
Director: Joe Carnahan
Stars: Liam Neeson, Dermot Mulroney, Frank Grillo, James Badge Dale

The Buzz
Disappointed by Smokin’ Aces, then The Grey may restore your faith in Joe Carnahan.  Seems to be a run of the mill frozen survival movie, but Liam Neeson should not be underestimated when the theme is survival.

One for the Money
Rated: PG-13
Runtime: 106 min
Genre(s): Action, Comedy, Crime
Director: Julie Anne Robinson
Stars: Katherine Heigl, Jason O’Mara, Daniel Sunjata, John Leguizamo

The Buzz
Based on the popular novel series by Janet Evanovich, we get a recently divorced woman jumping into bounty hunting… and her first case is an ex.  The director, the stars and even the budget seem very TV friendly.  This is either a great idea to keep costs down and launch a franchise or a way to submarine it.  Are we done with Katherine Heigl yet?

We Need to Talk About Kevin
Rated: R
Runtime: 112 min
Genre(s): Drama, Thriller
Director: Lynne Ramsay
Stars: Tilda Swinton, John C. Reilly, Ezra Miller, Jasper Newell

The Buzz
The touching story about a mother and her sociopathic son, wait…?!? The word Hitchcockian has been bandied about this film. OK, it hasn’t made it up, but that’s the level the film is aiming for and it mostly achieves it. In the parts where it doesn’t live up to its lofty aspirations Tilda Swinton carries it until it finds it path again. Remember mother dealing with sociopathic son, not a feel good movie.

Man on a Ledge
Rated: PG-13
Runtime: 102 min
Genre(s): Crime, Thriller
Director: Asger Leth
Stars: Sam Worthington, Elizabeth Banks, Jamie Bell, Edward Burns, Kyra Sedgwick

The Buzz
A psychologist tries to talk down a jumper while across town a jewel heist is in progress.  Really it would be easy to compare this to Inside Man, but who cares when you have Elizabeth Banks and Jamie Bell in your movie.  So if you like any of those three things mentioned then you should check out this movie.

Limited Releases

In Darkness
Rating: R
Runtime: 145 min
Genre(s): Drama
Director: Agnieszka Holland
Stars: Robert Wieckiewicz, Benno Fürmann, Agnieszka Grochowska, Maria Schrader

The Buzz
This favourite for foreign Oscar focuses on a man rescuing Jewish refugees from Nazis in Poland. Writer David Shamoon interested Holland to revisit the Holocaust and maybe he can interest us in it too.  Remember, Foreign Oscar and Holocaust.

Albert Nobbs
Rated: R
Runtime: 113 min
Genre(s): Drama
Director: Rodrigo Garcia
Stars: Glenn Close, Mia Wasikowska, Aaron Johnson, Jonathan Rhys Meyers

The Buzz
Glenn Close plays a woman pretending to be a man to work and survive in 19th century Ireland. After three decades she feels trapped. It’s like Mrs Doubtfire without the funny… that does sound depressing.
