The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 1 Opens This Week
Breaking Dawn, the newest movie in the Twilight series opens this week amid a frenzy of hype. Fans are already camping out in line to be the first to see it when it opens.
In case you have been living under a rock for the past few years, the Twilight series is about a teenage girl named Isabella “Bella” Swan (Kristen Stewart) who moves to the town of Forks, Washington and falls in love with the vampire Edward Cullen (Robert Pattison). The story is told from the perspective of Bella.
Once the mystical elements have been removed, you are left with a love story at the center point. It is essentially a Disney romance between a girl coming of age and a world-weary boy, in modern times. Part of the reason this series has been so hugely popular is because it fills the whimsical void of romance in an otherwise cynical world. Of course, you can’t make it too easy for them to get together so along comes Jacob Black (Taylor Lautner) to create a love triangle. Throw in some attractive young adults, some token baddies and presto, instant hit.
The makers of the first Twilight movie quickly realized they had something and mobilized to capitalize on it. The first movie, Twilight was released in 2008 and grossed $35.7 million on opening day. The second, New Moon was released in 2009 and grossed $72.7 million on its opening day. The third, Eclipse was released in 2010 to the tune of $68.5 million in its first 24 hours. The fourth book was broken into two movies and Breaking Dawn Part 1 opens November 18, 2011. Historically, there is a couple of years gap between most movies in a series, but it was smart on the part of the producers of Twilight to churn the movies out as quickly as possible and keep the momentum going.
It is the hype that continues to drive the success of the Twilight saga and has other movie producers wanting to repeat the formula. The ingredients are easy to copy, but the outcome is what is elusive.
