The Vampire Diaries – Episode 3.08: Ordinary People
So many delicious details are revealed during this episode of the Vampire Diaries, as we learn about the original vampire family’s ancient secrets.
While Alaric (Matthew Davis) unravels the mystery of the hieroglyphic symbols found on the walls of the cavern, Elena (Nina Dobrev) takes a different approach and seeks out Rebekah (Claire Holt) for answers. After all, it was her family who signed the wall and told the story.
At first Rebekah doesn’t co-operate, but when Elena name-drops daddy Mikael (Sebastian Roche) (yup, the same guy who is hunting them is actually their father) and asks if she should wake him, Rebekah starts to share details. Apparently when the plague struck their home, they were searching for a new, safe place to come to and were guided to Mystic Falls before it was even Mystic Falls. It was actually a witch who guided them there. When they arrived, they were human and lived in a village among werewolves. Once a month when the full moon rose they sought shelter in the caverns. However, when Klaus (Joseph Morgan) took their youngest sibling out to watch a wolf transformation one night and the boy was attacked and killed, Mikael decided to take action. He wanted the village witch to perform the curse to make them better, faster and stronger than the wolves. She refused, saying it was an abomination so he turned to his wife, also a witch. She performed the ceremony, Mikael killed his human children and they were reborn as vampires.
As we know from previous episodes, it was a witch that put the spell on Klaus to restrain his werewolf side (Klaus was fathered by a werewolf, not Mikael). What we didn’t know was that the witch who did the curse was their mother and she did it after his werewolf side made its first appearance. Then, she turned her back on him. The family continued to live in the village, but were now shunned. That’s okay, it was difficult to control their vampire impulses anyway so they started eating the other villagers.
Another revelation through the trip down memory lane, is that Rebekah always thought it was their father who killed their mother. The cavern drawings however indicate otherwise. Big surprise, it was dear Klaus who killed her. This information is difficult for Rebekah to swallow and it is Elena who shares it with her. The two seem to develop some sort of bond during this storytelling session. At least now it makes a lot more sense as to why Mikael is hunting Klaus. I’m still wondering if Mikael just made Katherine (Nina Dobrev) a light snack or if she was a full meal since we haven’t heard from her since she woke him.
Bonnie (Kat Graham) brings the pendant that could not be destroyed to Alaric. He noticed that the pattern on the pendant, which is also a talisman is a recurring theme among the symbols. The two try to decipher the code of how to kill the original vampires. The only way that seems certain is the tree that is dangerous to them. However, the vampires made certain they burned the tree to the ground centuries ago.
Damon (Ian Somerhalder) springs Stefan (Paul Wesley) from the dungeon and takes him drinking after he decides he hasn’t ever been a fan of Lexi’s (Arielle Kebbel) methods. After they have been at the bar for a while, Mikael shows up. He immediately knows they are the Salvatore brothers and that Stefan is Klaus’s bitch. He tortures Damon until Stefan gives him some intel on Klaus. As Stefan is under Klaus’s compulsion, the only thing he can say is that he will lure Klaus back.
Elena and Damon have a couple of good tension building scenes in this episode. The first is when they are sparring early in the episode. The second is when she is getting ready for bed and finds Damon there waiting for her. They both reveal what they learned that day and Elena shares her realization that it will be Damon who brings Stefan back from the edge, not her.http://pokupo.com/2011/11/06/the-vampire-diaries-episode-3-08-ordinary-people/TVCW,The Vampire Diaries, vampires
