When Rockstar announces a game, it’s usually met with slavering anticipation. But none of their franchises evokes so much excitement and controversy as Grand Theft Auto. And now there is more to look forward to. Rockstar confirmed the development of Grand Theft Auto 5 (GTA V) after the release of a brief trailer (embedded below) showing the game in action. It’s a minute and twenty-four seconds long, but it’s full of promise. Set in the smoggy sun-kissed land of Los Santos, GTA V marks a return to the look of GTA: San Andreas—a fictional crime riddled version of Southern California. Rockstar has declared this latest game in the franchise “the largest and most ambitious game Rockstar has yet created.”

The trailer itself features a vast set of locations, from urban sprawl to mountain vistas. Rockstar promises the player “a bold new direction in open-world freedom, storytelling, mission-based gameplay and online multiplayer”. Considering the studios titles (L.A. Noire, Max Payne, and Red Dead Redemption) and given Rockstar’s track record of world-class writing, top tier technology, and solidly crafted games—GTA V is already shaping up to be a must buy. No release date or platform specifics have been announced, so stay tuned.
