Puss in Boots (2011)

Rated: PG
Genre(s): Adventure, Animation, Comedy, Fantasy
Director: Chris Miller
Starring: Antonio Banderas, Selma Hayek, Zack Galifianakis and Billy Bob Thornton

The adorable Puss; played by Antonio Banderas, who stole the show in Shrek 2 (2004) is back in his own feature movie Puss in Boots.

Puss in Boots is a spinoff prequel to the Shrek series character Puss in Boots and his adventure prior to his first encounter with Shrek and donkey in Shrek 2.

In Time (2011)

Rated: PG-13
Genre(s): Crime, Sci-Fi, Thriller
Director: Andrew Niccol
Starring: Justin Timberlake, Amanda Seyfried, Cilllian Murphy, Olivia Wilde

The last time we saw Timberlake, Seyfried and Wilde is a movie together was 2006’s Alpha Dog.  Now a mere 5 years later Wilde is playing Timberlake’s mom in a world where people stop aging at 25 and the new currency is time itself.

Timberlake is one of the poor who must earn time to keep living.  In shades of Logan’s Run meets Gattacca, he ends up with more time than he could ever use, but is accused of murdering to get that time. Solving his “crime” may unravel the society he lives in.

The Rum Diary (2011)

Rated: R
Genre(s): Adventure, Drama
Director: Bruce Robinson
Starring: Johnny Depp, Giovanni Ribisi, Aaron Eckhart

Johnny Depp returns to Hunter S. Thompson territory as an American journalist in 1950s Puerto Rico.

This film has been in post production for longer than most movies are in production.  But it does give us Depp playing something off-center that isn’t Jack Sparrow.  Only time will tell if this measures up to his performance in Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas.

Anonymous (2011)

Rated: PG-13
Genre(s): Drama
Director: Roland Emmerich
Starring: Rhys Ifans, Vanessa Redgrave, David Thewis

Emmerich is best known for high concept summer tent pole movies. Now he turns his eyes to ask who actually wrote the works of Shakespeare?

Literature scholars often wonder if the plays of the Bard are actually Shakespeare’s work, but the historical fantasy set during the Gloriana years seems a strange match for a big budget FX director. If nothing else it should look good and feel epic.

Limited Release Movies

Like Crazy (2011)

Rated: PG-13
Genre(s): Drama, Romance
Director: Drake Doremus
Starring: Felicity Jones, Anton Yelchin, Jennifer Lawrence

A British student is kicked out of the US after her visa expires and her America lover pursues her.

Like Crazy supposedly dispenses with all the Hollywood clich├ęs and provides a realistic romance movie. Word is the drama is very subtle and underplayed. Question is, does America really want a realistic romance movie?

Janie Jones (2011)

Rated: PG
Genre(s): Drama, Music
Director: David M. Rosenthal
Starring: Abigail Breslin, Alessandro Nivola, Elisabeth Shue

Don’t you hate when your groupie mother abandons you and you have to connect with your fading rock star dad? No, it’s not Liv Tyler’s biography, but Rosenthal’s latest indie movie.

A great cast hasn’t seemed to save this movie from some poor reviews.  Also the plot seems about 15 years late to be considered indie cool.
