Marvel released Joss Whedon’s Avengers trailer on Apple’s site today. It starts with a Heath Ledger Joker-esque monologue delivered by the movie’s villian, Loki. The rest of the trailer is a mixture of action snippets and Robert Downey Jr. stealing scenes over Nine Inch Nails “We’re in This Together”. Despite the introduction by Samuel L. Jackson’s Nick Fury you could be forgiven for thinking that this was an Ironman 3 and not an Avengers trailer. Although Captain America (Chris Evans) has a few lines he’s quickly outshined by Tony Stark’s witty dialog. The Hulk seems an afterthought in the trailer. After two unsuccessful movies, the Hulk still doesn’t seem like a good idea for feature films. This trailer is hitting while the Thor and Captain America movies are still fresh in people’s minds. That leaves poor Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson). The only female. The only one without any lines. The only one without her own movie. And yet she still feels a better addition than the Hulk.

The trailer does what a trailer should do, this is what the movie is about and here are some neat scenes. So what is the movie about? Taking a bunch of egomaniacs and trying to get them to work together. And Joss Whedon is the perfect person to run with the idea of making a team out of people who don’t play well with others. In fact he’s made a career out of it. So bring on Ironman 3, err… The Avengers, I’m ready for it.
