The images released from the third Christopher Nolan Batman film, The Dark Knight Rises, shows Catwoman (Anne Hathaway) wearing a black spandex unitard (sorry, catsuit) with a black Zorro style mask with tiny little ears to give it the “cat-like” appearance. Yes, after having successfully erased the memory of the cheesy ‘60s show and Tim Burton’s oddball interpretation we get Julie Newmar 2.0. Christopher Nolan, what were you thinking? And by that I mean what were you thinking in casting Anne Hathaway as Catwoman. The reason the Internet promoted the idea of Angelina Jolie as Catwoman is because the iconic burglar oozes sexuality just by breathing. Anne Hathaway is probably the polar opposite of what is needed in a successful Catwoman. She exudes boring, intellectual bookworm.

Then again, that’s about par for the course of Nolan and his female casting. While his male casting is spot on he continually makes poor choices for his female leads. While Katie Holmes looked good standing next to Christian Bale, she was a bit weak acting wise in a very strong cast. Then when Katie Holmes declined to return for the sequel, he cast Maggie Gyllenhaal. Maggie is an awesome actress, but she replaces Katie playing the same character and just isn’t pretty enough to stand next to Bale. And now we get Catwoman, who was previously played by Michelle Pfeiffer and Halle Berry, being played by wallflower Anne Hathaway. Yes, Hathaway has been nominated for all the acting hardware that matters and she has grown on me since seeing her in The Devil Wears Prada, but she is not the best choice for a character who should have the sex appeal of an adult film star.

The Heath Ledger surprised us with his awesome interpretation of the Joker and maybe Anne Hathaway can do the same, but the costume is a huge step back. Fans are already upset with the casting decision of Catwoman and the retro ‘60s costume isn’t going to make it any easier for her to win them over. Seriously Christopher, what’s so hard about a hooded leather catsuit with goggles? On the plus side we’ll probably only have to wait a few years for the Batman reboot. I’m kidding… OK not really.
