So after the two episode pilot that sets up the death of our heroes’ king and the destruction of their home by a traitorous general aligned to a crazy wizard wanting the protagonist’s sword, we are off on our quest to find the Book of O,… wait the once socially-minded prince has decided that rather than pursue the artifact that will stop the crazy wizard from doing unimaginably bad things he must track down the crazy wizard to kill him.

This first quest episode is basically Moby Dick. Lion-O, Cheetara, and Tygra leave the ruins of Thundara and Lion-O blows off two street urchins (WilyKit and WilyKat) who in the first episode he would have totally helped. WilyKit and WilyKat follow our heroes anyway. Now consumed with revenge Lion-O drives the group on the the wizards keep, but must cross a literal sea of sand. While grabbing fruit floating on the sea the cats are caught by fish-like sea raiders who left the food to try to lure a kraken-like monster. (I’m pretty sure the sea raiders pray to Dagon.) When said monster attacks only the cats have any claws and send it packing. Our captain Ahab welcomes them to his crew and Lion-O and him bond over their dangerous obsession to each kill their respective monsters. After pursuing the sea monster and losing the ship and some crew because the captain was obsessed with revenge, Lion-O realizes his own reckless quest. The beast is slain by the Sword of Omens and the fish people’s oasis spills out of the disemboweled monster.

My problem with ThunderCats so far is that your lead character, Lion-O, moves from lovable loser in the first two episodes to outright jerk in this one. It’s not impossible to pull off, but the voice acting is very uneven and the writing isn’t spectacular. I do like the new ThunderCats, but it seems to have a problem pulling off its lofty ambitions. I’ll keep watching it because it is so pretty, the world is very cool and my belief that the show will rise to what it could be—a very smart story about people forced to be bigger than they knew they could be.
